The award, granted annually to a single small business in each of the state's assembly districts, recognizes businesses that exemplify the contributions that 3.7 million small business owners make toward California's economy. Janet Miller, owner and publisher of the paper, received this special recognition from Assemblymember Lori Saldaňa. The Clairemont Community News is a 16-page monthly newspaper delivered free to all 21,000 homes in the Clairemont area, and distributed through news racks and at community gathering places. The CC News features stories of interest to the neighborhood and provides a resource for businesses and community groups to promote their products, services and events. The award was announced on May 26th during the annual California Small Business Day in Sacramento, and the Clairemont Community News joined small businesses of the year identified in over 75 legislative districts. Scores of legislators joined in chorus to salute the spirit of entrepreneurship among California's small business owners and operators throughout the day-long event. The 76th district includes the central and northern portion of the city of San Diego, including the communities of Clairemont, Bay Park, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Point Loma, Tierrasanta, Serra Mesa, Hillcrest, University Heights, North Park, South Park, Linda Vista, Mission Valley, City Heights, Old Town, Normal Heights, Mission Hills and Downtown San Diego. CCN was the only business from these neighborhoods honored with the award. The 76th district has a vibrant business community, so it was a great honor to be chosen from among so many successful companies," Miller said. "This is a special event in which government, businesses, associations and community come together to honor the small business contributions of innovation, job creation and economic growth to the State of California," said Betty Jo Toccoli, President of the California Small Business Association, on behalf of the two-dozen small-business organizations hosting the event. Small businesses serve as the primary economic engine that drives the state's economy. Over one-half of the Californians employed in the private sector work for a small business. The state's small firms produce more new jobs, more inventions, and more patents, than any other size company in California or any other state in the nation. |
